Handicaps

Golf League HQ includes its own league-handicap calculation and management system.

Commissioners can configure handicap rules, maintain overrides, freeze values for a season, and manage player-specific tee and eligibility information.

This article describes the currently implemented Golf League HQ calculation behavior.

Overview

A player's handicap can be influenced by:

• Completed qualifying rounds
• Course rating
• Course slope
• League handicap settings
• Number of rounds available
• League-specific handicap override
• Organization-level handicap
• Season handicap freeze
• Round type inclusion rules

Golf League HQ does not currently integrate live GHIN, USGA, or Arccos handicap data.

Handicap Sources

A player may have multiple handicap-related values available.

These include:

• Computed Handicap Index

  Calculated from the player's qualifying Golf League HQ rounds.

• Organization Handicap

  An organization-level value stored for the player.

• League Handicap Override

  A league-specific handicap value stored with the player's league membership.

• Handicap Freeze

  A season-specific frozen value that takes precedence when active.

Commissioners should understand which value is intentionally being used before making manual changes.

Differential Calculation

For the implemented pre-2020 USGA-style system, Golf League HQ calculates the round differential from adjusted gross score, course rating, and slope.

The implemented calculation is based on:

(Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope

The result is rounded to one decimal place before the broader handicap calculation continues.

Adjusted Gross Score

Golf League HQ applies Equitable Stroke Control-style score caps for the pre-2020 handicap method.

The cap depends on the player's course-handicap range.

Implemented cap levels include:

• 10
• 8
• 7
• Par + 2

depending on the applicable handicap band.

Best-Rounds Selection

Golf League HQ uses a classic best-rounds approach based on how many qualifying rounds are available.

The handicap settings control values such as:

• Rounds window
• Rounds used
• Multiplier

The qualifying differentials are evaluated according to those rules.

Multiplier

For the implemented pre-2020 style, Golf League HQ applies the configured multiplier.

The classic configuration uses 0.96.

Maximum Handicap

Commissioners can configure separate maximum handicap values for men and women.

Golf League HQ uses the player's profile gender when applying those caps.

The calculated handicap is not allowed below zero.

New Players

Golf League HQ includes special handling for golfers with very little scoring history.

No qualifying rounds

A player with no qualifying rounds currently reads as:

0.0

That means a completely new player can initially appear as a scratch golfer until qualifying scoring or a manual handicap value is available.

One or two qualifying rounds

With very limited history, Golf League HQ uses its first-round rule.

The implemented 80 percent rule is based on:

(Adjusted Gross Score − Par) × 80%

subject to the system's applicable limits.

9-Hole Rounds

The current Golf League HQ calculation uses a simplified 9-hole approach.

Golf League HQ uses a par-36 baseline rather than combining 9-hole scores using the modern USGA 9-hole process.

Commissioners should use the Golf League HQ result according to their league's chosen rules.

Handicap Recalculation

Handicap recalculation occurs as part of supported score-saving workflows.

It is not simply recalculated continuously whenever any related data changes.

Commissioners should pay special attention after:

• Score corrections
• Offline scoring
• Missing course rating/slope
• Manual overrides
• Freeze changes

Offline Scoring Caveat

The current offline scoring synchronization path updates gross score but does not run every handicap-recalculation step used by normal online score entry.

If a player's handicap appears out of date after offline scoring, review the round and handicap state.

Missing Rating or Slope

Differential calculation requires course rating and slope.

If those values are missing, Golf League HQ cannot calculate the normal differential for that round.

Review the course and tee setup before relying on handicap updates.

Handicap Allowance

The league handicap allowance determines how much of a player's handicap is applied in league net scoring.

For example, a league may use a percentage rather than 100% of the player's handicap.

The allowance is configured in League Settings.

Sub and Tournament Rounds

Handicap Settings let commissioners decide whether applicable substitute and tournament rounds are included.

Use those settings according to your league rules.

Rainouts

Rainout rounds are excluded from handicap calculation.

Handicap Freezes

A season handicap freeze overrides normal recalculation for the affected player and season.

Use freezes when your league rules require a fixed handicap for part or all of the season.

Organization-Level Propagation

When Golf League HQ recalculates a handicap, the resulting value can also update the player's organization-level handicap record.

This means qualifying play in one league can affect the broader Golf League HQ handicap value associated with that organization.

Preferred Tee

Preferred Tee is stored on the player's profile.

When a round's course has a matching tee, Golf League HQ can use the applicable tee information for handicap-related scoring.

Preferred Tee is not a commissioner-controlled league-wide setting.

Senior Tees

Senior Tee approval is player-specific.

Commissioners and Secretaries can approve eligible golfers through the roster workflow.

There is no separate Senior-specific handicap formula.

Senior Tee impact comes through the rating, slope, and other tee data associated with the tee being played.

GHIN, USGA, and Arccos

These integrations are not currently active handicap integrations in Golf League HQ.

They may appear as Coming Soon options in the interface, but no live synchronization should be assumed.

Best Practices

• Check new players before team generation

  A golfer with no qualifying history may display 0.0.

• Make sure course data is complete

  Rating and slope are required for normal differential calculation.

• Avoid unnecessary manual overrides

  Use overrides when league rules require them, not simply to correct a misunderstanding of the calculated value.

• Review offline rounds

  If a golfer scored offline, confirm the expected handicap behavior before final standings are announced.

• Document league handicap rules

  Golf League HQ provides calculation tools, but golfers should still understand the rules your league has chosen.

What happens when a new player has no rounds?

The current calculated index is 0.0 until additional scoring history or a manual value is available.

What is the differential formula?

Golf League HQ uses adjusted gross score, course rating, and slope in the implemented differential calculation.

Does Golf League HQ use a 0.96 multiplier?
