Commissioner Guide
Teams & Flights
Create teams, assign players, manage flights, and configure team handicaps in Golf League HQ.
Teams & Flights
Teams turn your roster into the competitive structure your league uses throughout the season.
Golf League HQ supports both automatic and manual team creation, along with flights, starting holes, and team-handicap configuration.
Overview
From the Teams area, commissioners can:
- Generate teams automatically
- Create teams manually
- Assign players to team positions
- Swap player positions
- Delete teams
- Move teams between flights
- Set starting holes
- Choose flight leaderboard behavior
- Use formula-based or manual team handicaps
Team management is commissioner-only. Secretaries can help with the roster, handicaps, and Senior Tee approvals, but the Teams area's create, generate, edit, and delete controls are available to commissioners.
Before You Begin
Before creating teams, confirm:
- The roster is complete
- Player handicaps are current
- Flights are defined if your league uses them
- Your team format is decided
- Your scramble handicap percentages are set when applicable
Generating teams before those pieces are ready usually creates extra rework.
Generate Teams Automatically
Golf League HQ can build teams automatically from the league roster.
The current automatic process:
- Sorts golfers by handicap
- Pairs players in handicap order
- Places the lower-handicap golfer in the first team position
This provides a quick starting structure when your league wants system-generated teams.
Create Teams Manually
Use manual team creation when you already know which golfers should play together.
1. Open Teams
Navigate to the league's Teams area.
2. Choose manual team creation
Add a team and select its players.
3. Review team positions
Golf League HQ supports the two player positions typically shown as the first and second team slots.
4. Save the team
Complete the team setup and continue until the season's teams are ready.
Swap Team Positions
You can swap the golfers assigned to the first and second team positions.
This changes their displayed team position without requiring the team to be rebuilt.
Team Handicaps
Golf League HQ supports both:
- Formula-based team handicaps
- Manual team handicaps
Use the method defined by your league rules.
Scramble Team Handicaps
For scramble competition, Golf League HQ can calculate a team handicap using the league's configured low- and high-handicap percentages.
The implemented formula follows:
Low-handicap player × low percentage + high-handicap player × high percentage
The league settings determine the percentages used.
Manual Handicap Override
If your league rules require a different team handicap, commissioners can use a manual team handicap instead of the calculated value.
Keep manual overrides consistent with your league's published rules.
Flights
Teams can be assigned to flights.
Flights allow the league to separate teams into different competitive groupings.
Commissioners can move teams between flights as needed.
Flight Leaderboard Type
Each flight can use a leaderboard style appropriate to the league configuration.
The implemented options include competition views such as:
- Standings
- Skins
Choose the flight behavior that matches how your league tracks competition.
Starting Holes
Teams can have a starting-hole value associated with them.
This is useful for leagues using shotgun starts or other round structures where teams begin on different holes.
Round-specific pairings can also carry starting-hole assignments.
Delete a Team
Commissioners can delete teams when they are no longer needed.
Before deleting a team, review whether the team is already associated with season activity.
Rebuilding Teams Mid-Season
Avoid casually regenerating teams after the season has started.
The automatic generation workflow replaces the season's existing teams, and team changes can affect how commissioners interpret standings, pairings, and historical competition.
Best Practices
Finalize handicaps first
Team generation and team-handicap calculations depend on the golfer handicap information available at the time.
Decide your flights before scheduling competition
This makes team assignment and standings easier to manage consistently.
Use manual teams when continuity matters
If teams should remain stable from a prior plan or draft, create them manually rather than regenerating.
Review starting holes separately from team identity
Starting holes are operational information. Don't use them as a substitute for round-specific pairing review.
